Introduced in Chapter One The Hybrid The main character of Legacy of a Traveler. A human-alien hyrbid, he was designed to be the ultimate arbiter of Reason. Any and every decision that he makes must be of Reason, by Reason, and for Reason, or no action is taken. While this causes...complications for certain situations, the hybrid consults his many of his twenty-five personalities, each built into his psyche to guide and protect him. Even though the hybrid is just that-- a combination of the beauty of human form and the near-invulnerability of a powerful alien species-- the hybrid is quite human in appearance. With a height of 2.3 meters (7 feet) and a mass of 145 kg (320 pounds), the hybrid could easily blend in with any human crowd. One would only notice a rather large and powerful-looking fellow if one were to pass him on the street. This would be true if it weren't for a few small exceptions. First off, the hybrid's eyes have no pupils to speak of; the irises are a bright, sky blue that covers the entire eyeball, an effect of having non-human blood flowing through his veins. Another small detail is that the hybrid's blood is blue, even when exposed to outside air. There are other physical oddities, but those don't become apparent until some time later in the story. Distrusting blind Faith and unreasonable human emotions, the hybrid might come off as a cold-hearted Reasonist, concerned only with concrete facts and evading abstract emotions. This is untrue, however, as the hybrid has a strong sense of humor, compassion, and an intense desire to help Humanity as it struggles to survive against chaotic forces from both within and without. Favorite saying: "The greatest fool is one who believes something can be considered credible with no scientific proof or consensus whatsoever." Regulator With a strong Scottish accent, Regulator is one of the most unique personality of the hybrid's. Being only one of two personas that can speak with the hybrid while he is conscious, the flame-haried Regulator captures a great fraction of the hybrid's attention. Standing a shade over 1.4 meters (5 feet, 4 inches) tall and weighing 100 kg (220 lbs), Regulator dresses as a policeman in the theater of the hybrid's mind. Rather short compared to some of his fellows, the pudge-faced Scotsman packs a mean whallop when he feels that one of the hybrid's personalities is "out of line" as he smacks them into dreamland with his ever-present police baton. Representing the forces of Order and unity in the hybrid's mind, Regulator is somewhat of a control freak. This is a necessary character flaw, as he feels it is his duty to the hybrid that someone keep the wayward personalities in line. Favorite saying: "Ah'll get Basket if it's the last thing ah do!" Basket The tall and lanky Basket is the complete reciprical of his counterpart, Regulator. The only persona besides the Scotsman that can chat directly with the hybrid, Basket makes his rather...unique opinions heard to the hybrid. Considering himself a high priest of the mutt-god CUJO, the Danish Basket is a world-class troublemaker and enjoys nothing more then insulting his Scottish compatriot. Well, that's not exactly true. As he styles himself in the clothing of a pimp, Basket enjoys many of the positive perks that go along with that, such as sex and beer. Representing the force of Chaos and disarray, Basket loves to stir up trouble. Favorite Saying: "IN THE NAME OF CUJO DOTH I STRIKE THEE DOWN, WENCH!" Overseer While belonging to a race known simply as the "Designers", Overseer possesses many human characteristics. While quite powerful in the Designer hierarchy, he has achieved this power through less then honorable means. His political opponents have followed a habit of dying before they run against him, though no connection has been found. Arrogant, obsessive, and paranoid, Overseer is considered one of the most powerful and dangerous Designers in the Hive. Other Supporting Characters In addition to these four main characters, there are many others who reside in the Hybrid's mind. The "setting" in which the personalities meet is that of a movie theater. Below is a table of the personas besides Regulator and Basket. While not showing up as often as the main characters, each of them have unique characteristics.
Introduced in Chapter Two Paladin Griffin Paladin Griffin is a member of the Fundamentalist Imperium (for more information, see "The Societies" page.) and is one of the most powerful military leaders in the Imperium. Possessing a fierce devotion to his Faith and no hesitation to kill or maim any who he views as a threat to that dogma, Griffin is most dangerous. Also, he holds deep grudges against those who defeat him in battle. Then there's the bad news. Griffin, like the vast majority of the Fundamentalist military, is illiterate and has virtually no knowledge of anything beyond warfare and killing. Archbishop Bjorn Havgaard Steffensen A Dane who was born into a wealthy aristrocratic family, Bjorn fought his way up the Fundamentalist ranks until becoming Archbishop of all of Denmark by the age of 19. However, in an uprising against the Vatican, the Archbishop's kneecap was smashed by a well-thrown spear. The ensuing wound destroyed Bjorn's faith in the invincibility of the Fundamentalist military and angered his ire against the Vatican. Ever since losing his military prowess due to the injury, Bjorn has been anxious to find some sort of revenge against the Pope and all he has stood for. Cleric Sheena El-Alfy An orphan at the age of eight, young Sheena was adopted into a convent in Copenhagen and, although it was against the Vatican's edict, the local monks, noticing her innate curiosity, taught the young girl how to read and write. Not only did the monks teach Sheena to be literate, but they also educated her in their healing arts, which she took to like a moth to flame. In fact, she became so proficient that Bjorn hired her as a Cleric, although that too was against Vatican edict forbidding women to have jobs. Shadow Elemental Crono Blackwood Raised in the Global Compact, Crono was discovered to have a fifth variant of the Elemental Gene, which allowed him to temper his energies to adapt the element of Shadow. Founding the Shadow wing of the Elemental Order, young Blackwood quickly gained the respect of his fellow Elementals by his incredible learning curve and unorthodox fighting style.
Introduced in Chapter Three
Hybridia
While her purpose and origins are unknown, Hybridia is one of the most sought-after beings in the multiverse. Her beauty combined with her overwhelmingly cute nievete cause both men and women to seek her with lustful thoughts plaguing their minds.
The Second Hybrid, Nasir
The second success of the JDK series, Nasir was created to be the complete opposite of the Hybrid. Basing his entire existence and decisions on his own Faith, Nasir has spent his tenure during his 'training' erecting monoliths celebrating the personas in his head, all based off famous spiritual figures.
Instead of discovering new science and technology as the Hybrid has, his successor was ordered to discover various interpretations of religious dogma and various spiritual groups.
Nasir, like the Hybrid, has done some traveling. He too has traveled to the Fundamentalist Imperium, but due to his Faithist background, he was more warmly received. He and Paladin Griffin developed a close friendship fighting insurgents against Vatican rule.
