A five-year-old Shinji Ikari finds himself the target of a new interested party...

Changes

Disclaimer: The Characters of Evangelion do not belong to me, I'm sorry to say. They belong to Gainax. Also, any references I make to mentalics, the Foundation, the Second Foundation, and psychohistory, the First Speaker, as well as the Seldon Plan belong to the late Issac Asimov and the Asimov Estate. Suing me won't do any good because I dont even have enough money to upgrade my pathetic little 56K modem.

This revision includes some major changes (no pun intended) from the original GL: Changes. I was reading over it, and I think I began to derail from the main storyline too much here, and so I decided to revise the whole series to make it more accurate, more storyline-based, and make the whole Foundation organization in the shadows for the most part, except near the end, where they become a major force. You'll see!

Genetic Lessons: Changes (Revised)

"Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Ikari. You have a healthy baby boy." The doctor said with relief, removing her scrubs. Both Ikaris sighed. After the brain inactivity scare, as well as the questions of the treatment that Shinji received, both Gendo and Yui were having doubts about Shinji's well-being. However, Yui was not totally convinced.

"How can you be sure? Are you running tests? How is he? I want to see him! Is everything working? Is he breathing?" The doctor was getting nervous, and sweatdropped. "There are tests being run on your son now. The MRI showed no extremely unusual activity. It seems the treatment worked well, except for." The doctor sighed, and rubbed her eyes.

"Is there something wrong with Shinji, doctor?" Gendo had to yell. Yui was giving out a string of curses, as well as demanding to see her son. It took three burly orderlies to restrain her.

The doctor quickly shook her head. "Not that I can tell. You do know that human beings only consciously use ten percent of their brain, correct? The rest is redundant memory." Gendo nodded. "Well, it seems that in Shinjis case, there are areas of the brain where doctors dont know anything about, and those areas of the brain are activated also. It will be quite exciting to see what happens, though I could guess if you want. I am no psychologist, but I could hazard something. If you want more information, I suggest you see a friend of mine, Dr. Crono Blackwood."

Yui, now calm, was the first to recover. "What would you guess?"

"Well, because many of the areas of the brain affected are centered around memory, logistics, intelligence/knowledge centers, and visual perception, I would guess that Shinji would remember more, be smarter, and see further and more clearly than the average human being. However, there are still parts of the brain affected that we know nothing about, and these mental "bonuses" might cause Shinji to become autistic, and by that, I mean secluded from society. Whether it is for good or for ill is something that I cannot guess at this time. Remember, these are just a few very optimistic hypothesis I am putting forward."

A nurse, who had entered a few moments before, cleared her throat to gain attention. "Doctor, the tests on Shinji Ikari are completed. Both of you may see him now." The nurse turned to the two Ikaris. "Follow me, please."

A beeping sound, and the doctor looked at her pager. "Excuse me please, I must make a call. Good luck with your son." Gendo nodded, and he and Yui followed the nurse.

The doctor picked up her phone, and dialed a number. "Yes, the tests are complete. Everything is proceeding according to the Plan. Shinji Ikari will be in our hands within seven years or so. Yes. I understand. But sir, you must inform the mayor of the First Foundation. Yes, this is serious enough. Goodbye, sir."

"Shinji Ikari will be ours, and he shall be one of the most powerful mind-bending mentalics our order has seen since the days of Vara Liso herself."

(October 4, 2005)

"What do you plan on doing today, Gendo dear, besides reading that newspaper?" Yui sweetly asked her husband.

"Yes dear." Was all that Gendo replied.

"You know that we have that parent/teacher conference with Shinjis teacher today, and after that, Ill be commencing that activation test on Unit-01."

"Yes dear."

"I wonder how he has been doing in school. I hope his grades are doing alright."

"Yes dear."

"Put down that newspaper and help me with the dishes!"

"Yes dear." Gendo did not put the paper down, turned the page, and took a sip of his coffee.

"Hello." A very quiet voice stirred Gendo and Yui from their daily morning routine, and a very downcast Shinji walked out of his room, sweating from his morning exercises.

His mother stopped him. "Shinji, you seem very quiet today. Is anything wrong?"

Shinji looked up, startled. "No, nothing wrong. I just dont want to go to this conference today, thats all."

"Have you had breakfast yet? Ill be the worst mother on the planet if I dont have my son have breakfast before he goes to school."

Yui smiled at her son. While not tall, Shinji was quite broad from extensive exercises he did every morning. She remembered his first steps and words like they were yesterday, but she knew they were almost four years ago. Shinji seemed to have the markings of a child prodigy. When he was six months old, Yui spotted him reading a book meant for elementary school students. Since then, Shinji had been studying every science book he could find, as well as exercising every day. When Yui asked why, he said he didnt know. He said it just felt right.

(Unknown location; Same time. The doctor who had given Shinji gene therapy is talking on the phone to someone.)

"It is imperative you warn the First Foundation. You know as well as I that we will need their firepower! If we do not acquire Shinji Ikari within one year, we risk losing track of him! First Speaker, you must realize that we must have an agent that will operate those primitive pieces of waste matter that GEHIRN is building. Evangelicals, or whatever they are. Sir, I insist" The doctor sighed. Why doesnt he see what Im trying to tell him?

The voice replied, with replied calmly. "You are in no position to give orders, though I respect your right to voice your opinion. Shinji Ikari will be in our grasp, soon, and I will be there to witness it."

(Shinjis school: Seven hours later.)

Shinji squirmed in his chair, as if he were uncomfortable about something. His teacher was yelling at him again, even though he knew quite well of Shinjis antisocial behavior.

"Well well Ikari, it seems Ill finally have you out of my classroom, you disrespectful little pond scum. That is, if your parents have any kind of common sense, which you seem to lack."

Shinji did not answer. He couldnt. Having someone yell at him was too much for his usual social avoidance. He closed his eyes, put his head in his hands, and tried to shut out the voice that was pounding away at the very foundations of his sanity.

His teacher sat back in his chair, and grinned, though inwardly, he was fuming. "There you go again, you twerp. Youre like that would-be physicist.Evan Bartraron .who supposedly was going to present a unified theory for physics before he disappeared, and he liked to hide away from the world, just like you. Im sure that you and he wouldve gotten along."

Shinji was trembling. Not only from the screaming which constantly was making him cringe in terror, but from insulting potentially the greatest physicist on the earth. He couldnt take it anymore. No one would push him around like this. Ever. Shinji stood, strode towards his teacher, and glared. His anger erupted. "Evan Bartraron knew what he was doing, unlike you. He was considered the greatest revolutionary scientist since Leonardo da Vinci. He would have brought a new era upon physics, until he disappeared and was considered murdered by the reactionary, right-wing, ultra-conservative nazis of his own country."

Shinjis teacher looked ready to explode, and Shinji about to do the same, when a knock on the door stopped them. Yui and Gendo walked in. Shinjis teacher quickly regained control, and motioned for them to sit down. He turned to Shinji. "Shinji, why dont you step outside for a little while. Your parents and I have to talk." Shinji nodded, and exited the room.

******************************************************************************************

"Mr. and Mrs. Ikari, let me be blunt. Your son is very gifted academically. It seems he should be in a university, not grade school. Yesterday, I gave him a test that he passed easily, and that was giving some of the most gifted university students in the world a hard time. Its almost as if he knows what the answers are before he is asked the question. Thats your son academically.

"His attitude leaves something to be desired, however. Shinji Ikari is the most reclusive, annoying little upstart I have ever met, with all due respect. I believe he should be kicked out of school as promptly as possible. He will be, actually, but not in the way I wish. Anacquaintance of mine believes that he should be put into college level programs at a college in the United States, on a full scholarship."

His parents sat there, shocked. They knew Shinji liked science, but to the point of understanding higher level science? Calculus? Advanced geometry? How much else did he know? Yui was the first to recover. "W-what? Surely you are mistaken. Shinji is five years old. His brain is not even fully developed yet. How can he know all that was given to him? How can your acquaintance know of Shinji already? Even if he did accept this scholarship, how would he react to being placed in a university seven thousand miles away?"

Shinjis teacher scowled. "Your questions are better asked to someone who knows more about Shinji than I. However, Harvey Mudd college has always been a college of tolerance, and is very strong in natural sciences and psychology. I believe this is good for him. Of course, he will have to take tests to prove that he knows the material for all of grade school, but that should present no problem. If you wish for your son to get the best education, it might be a good idea to take him up on this offer." He handed Gendo a piece of paper with a phone number on it. "Thats the number for my acquaintance, a man by the name of Crono Blackwood. If you want more information, call it. You have about one week to decide. Thank you for your time."

Gendo, who dimly remembered the name from the doctor who helped Shinji with his gene therapy, wondered how this Crono Blackwood knew so many people associated with Shinji. He decided to give this matter some thought.

******************************************************************************************

With that, he ushered them out. Shinji was waiting for them right outside, having recovered from hisemotional episode. "So, how did it go?"

Gendo spoke for the first time since entering the classroom. "Son, we have to talk."

******************************************************************************************

"Thats ok, I guess. But must I be around so many people? "

"Son, Im sorry. I am not sure you completely understand the situation here."

"But I do. I am being asked to attend a very tolerant college in the U.S. for free, to study what I really like." Shinji gives his father that Why do you have a problem with this? look. However, coming from a five year old, it looks.strange.

"Yes, but you will be living away from your mother and I. Also, you do not know anyone there. Besides, what about your condition? After all, you are just a kid." Gendo is sweating bullets now, and realizing the situation he is in.

Shinji looked away. When he turned back to his father, a faint look of determination was in his eyes. "Father, even if there will be lots of people there, I would like to go."

"Ummumm.I wish Yui was here.are you sure you want to do this?"

"Yes, father."

"Ok.but you will call, right?"

"I have no reason not to."

"Shinji, that is not an answer."

"Of course I will call."

"Very well then. Your mother may not like it, but you may go."

"I had better get packed then." Shinji walks to his room, the conversation over. Gendo starts thinking. Maybe its a good thing that the little brat is gone.he deserves to be abandoned.WHAT AM I THINKING?!!

*****************************************************************************

The First Speaker nearly jumped four feet, much to the surprise of the officers around him. I suppose that telepathic link with Gendo Ikari was a little too strong for my comfort.but oh well. By tomorrow, Ikari will abandon his son, and Shinji will be ours. The First Speaker chuckled.

(The next dayat a secret research building underground..)

Yui came out of the locker room in a skin-tight white and blue plugsuit. She turned to Naoko Akagi, who sat at a computer terminal. "Are we ready to commence activation?"

Naoko nodded. "Sure, we can start anytime." Bitch She added with a quick thought.

******************************************************************************

Shinji begins to sob. His father is leaving him behind, and his psychological foundations crumble. As soon as his fathers car is out of sight, a place jumps into Shinjis mind. He does not know how or why, but he runs as fast as his legs can carry him to his destination.

*******************************************************************************

As Shinji enters the building, a receptionist spots him. "Is there anything I can do for you, young man?"

Shinji does not even notice himself saying this, and runs by the receptionist. Being a Second Foundationer, she scanned his thoughts, and found only one thought in his mind. I am here to see the First Speaker. I must see the First Speaker. The receptionist facefaults, as she has no idea how this little kid knows of the best-kept secret in the universe. "Excuse me?"

Shinji doesnt even notice the receptionist, or how stunned she is, and runs toward the stairwell. Slamming the door open, Shinji runs up the stairs, taking them two at a time.

When he reached the fifth floor, he threw open the door, and ran down the hall. Stopping at a seemingly usual door, Shinjis thoughts begin to return to him, but he paid them no heed as a man opened the door, looked down, and smiled.

They stood like that for a few moments, until the man spoke. "Greetings, Shinji Ikari. I have heard a lot about you. My name is Crono Blackwood. Tell me, how would you like to be part of something wonderful?"

Shinji smiles through his tears, and knows he will be alright.

To be continued..

Authors notes: Well, that wasnt so bad. I would like to thank my pre-reader, Richard Lutz. Anyway, I hoped you liked Genetic Lessons: Changes (Revised). I wrote this as how Shinji got involved with the Second Foundation. This revised episode, I tried to keep Shinjis attitude somewhat like the original Shinji, and not go off on a tangent, yet.

Oh, by the way. Something I did not mention in Prologue. The term "Gene therapy" is a treatment that is being developed now. It cannot do what I say it will do in this fic, but I figure it will in the next ten years or so.

I will commence work on Genetic Lessons: Adaption immediately, which will focus on Shinjis life just before the events in the main Eva series storyline, as well as the Third Angel, as soon as I can. If you noticed, I have deleted the omakes from this episode, because, well, they suck. I also dont want to offend anyone with schizophrenia, which is a recognized, very real problem for many suffering people out there, and I sympathize.
