Genetic Lessons: Adaption (Revised)

(2015, undisclosed location.)

"So I am to meet with this Misato Katsuragi outside the Tokyo-3 train station?"

"Yes. I take it you saw that amusing photo she sent? As well as read her intelligence and psychological reports?" The man on the other side of the phone chuckled.

"Yes, I did." Shinji looked down to cover his embarrassment. His psychologist of ten years and roommate, Pr. Crono Blackwood, smiled.

"Your opinion?"

Shinji sighed. "According to the intelligence reports, she seems like a competent officer. I do hope that she knows what she is doing."

"Not bad, for an analysis of such a simple human. Remember Shinji, piloting the Eva is mental more than physical. I have checked the specifications for the Eva you will be piloting, and it has the capacity to act as a conduit for the energies that you could release, without much damage." Shinji had caught the note of contempt when Crono mentioned humans.

Shinji breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you, First Speaker. That is very good to hear. But if I do release those energies, how will I explain it to Commander Ikari?"

"Uhwelljust say that you have studied how to do that and that you were merely converting energy from the electrical input of the Eva to an exterior force." Upon hearing this, Shinjis eyes bulged.

"Tell them the facts? But sir"

"What? Who said to tell them the whole facts? I merely said to tell them enough to make it seem like you are not lying. I am not saying, under any circumstances, to tell them the whole truth. None. Unless of course, I inform you to do so."

Shinji stiffened. "Yes sir. Good bye."

The First Speaker laughed. "You do not have to stiffen like that, Shinji. Relax. Good skill to you."

**************************************************************************************

Shinji stepped off the train as the doors opened and checked his watch. That is unusual. The train was fifteen minutes behind schedule, and she still is not here. The sound of weaponry being fired was something unmistakable, and Shinji heard it. That must be the United Nations forces attempting to stop what this society calls Angels.

Then he saw it. The Angel was easily fending off the military attack, with no effort at all. After it destroyed a 30 story office building, Shinji caught a glimpse of it. So you are my enemy. He merely stared at it for a few seconds, then a blur of blue and a screech of tires caught his attention. 1.3 seconds later, the car stopped and the passenger side door opened.

The woman matched the description of Misato Katsuragi, as Shinji remembered from the intelligence reports the head of Foundation: Earth Security had given him.

"You Shinji Ikari?" Shinji nodded.

"Get in. Sorry for being so late, but things have been busy around here lately, with the angel attack and all." Misato got her first good look at him as he entered the car.

Shinji was well built. At the age of fourteen, many of the high-ranking people at the Second Foundation congratulated him, saying how they were reminded of photos of the First Speaker himself at that age. Shinji could bench press over three hundred pounds, lift two-fifty over his head, had a heart beat of 12 beats per minute, and could leg press six hundred pounds.

As for looks, Shinji had that too. His face had many well-chiseled features, and dark brown eyes that seemed to stare right through a person who dared look him in the eyes. He was wearing a black skin-tight bodysuit, which stretched from his ankles all the way up to his neck, and down both arms to the wrists that seemed to be made of the same material that bulletproof vests are made out of, as well as a jacket, shorts, gloves and boots, all the same color and material.

Shinji noticed he was being looked at. "Miss Katsuragi, I suggest you pay attention to the road." Luckily, Misato turned right before she hit a tree. Misato began to have doubts about this whole operation. Sending this kid into battle in an inactivated Eva with not training experience against a monster? However, as though reading her mind, Shinji gave her his feelings.

"Dont worry, Miss Misato. I can do it." Shinji looked down, uncertain. The revealing picture that Misato sent to him was still burned in his memory, and he couldnt look at her without that image popping up. He allowed himself a small chuckle, and mentally reviewed what his superior told him to do: just get to the Eva, and the pilot of Unit-01 would take over.

Misato stopped as she saw all the military UN units fly away from the angel. Automatically realizing what was going to happen, she grabbed Shinji and threw him to the floor of the car. "Shit, theyre going to use an N2 mine!" Shinji, however, didnt seem to mind. "I think, Miss Misato, that there is no great danger" The rest of his sentence was cut off as a huge burst of light exploded, followed quickly by a deafening roar, flipping the car over several times.

**************************************************************************************

"I am not sure that I have formally introduced myself as of yet, miss Katsuragi. My name is Shinji Ikari." Shinji bowed as Misato popped the hood of her car. She stopped, smiled, and stood looking right into his eyes. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Shinji Ikari. I am Captain Misato Katsuragi. Please call me Misato. Unfortunately, until I can get the car restarted, we will not be making it to NERV headquarters anytime soon. However, I have an idea. Ill be right back." Misato dashed off, leaving Shinji with the car. Shinji looked at what had become of the car. I am glad the First Speaker insisted I learn how these primitive machines work. Now, I should be able to jump start this using a small expenditure of my internal energy Shinji sighed as he took off his gloves.

**************************************************************************************

When Misato got back, it was to a running car. Fumbling with the car batteries she "borrowed", she shrugged and opened the trunk. Dumping the batteries into the back, she popped into the drivers seat to see Shinji wiping off his hands with a towel. "How did you restart the car?" She asked, confused. "It was simple, really. I applied what I had learned in an auto repair class I took at Harvey Mudd College." Shinji replied as he reapplied his gloves. Not answering the question, eh? I guess the records on you were right when they said you were secretive. Misato thought to herself.

Misato motioned to her cell phone. "Shinji, could you hit the memory five button for me? I have to make an appointment." As Shinji nodded the affirmative, her thoughts wandered back to the coming battle. Can he really beat that thing? Shinji, when you do battle that thing, pummel it into Angel dust for me.

"Ritsuko? Yes, this is Misato. I have the Third Child. Make sure you have"

**************************************************************************************

(Inside NERV headquarters. Shinji, Misato and Ritsuko enter the main hangar.)

Shinji looked around in the dark. "Why is there a lack of adequate lighting in this hangar? I was informed there would be sufficient light." Ritsuko and Misato giggled. "Dont worry Shinji. Just give me a second." Ritsuko didnt notice Shinjis stare as she engaged the lights. Shinji noticed the huge, purple and green robotic head that seemed to stare right at him. Misato was quite surprised at Shinjis reaction, and the fact that he did not react was more amazing. He merely looked at it, as if it were just another part of something he saw daily. Just to make sure he was still alive, and not in shock, she lightly tapped his bulky shoulder. Before she could, however, he spoke.

"This is the Eva?" It was at that point that the said commander decided to enter the conversation.

"Will you pilot?" Commander Ikari watched from his post above the Eva, and looked down at his son. Shinji looked back at his father with hardly blinking. "Of course I will, Commander Ikari. Otherwise, I would not " Shinji stopped speaking as an intense pain entered his brain. He dropped to his knees, and cried out in pain. Before anyone could react, Shinji fell over into the pink coolant that surrounded the Eva, still screaming.

Misatos military instincts kicked in, and she ran to the edge of the bridge. She could not see Shinji, and called out his name. However, the commander seemed to care less about his son. "Sub-commander, send in the First Child. I am quite aware of her situation."

Moments later, a brown haired girl with pigtails came into the hangar. On a stretcher, that is. Ikari, seeming not to notice, addressed her. "Pilot Horaki, you are to pilot Unit 01. Is that understood?" Before she could reply between deeply heaving breaths another voice made itself known.

"I can still pilot, Commander." Shinji Ikari pulled himself back up to the bridge, much to the surprise of everyone, including the commander, whose body tensed. Misato was the first one to recover from the shock. "Howwhat.how." Misato stuttered. Shinji lifted up a hand.

"Its nothing, Misato. I will pilot."

The commander assumed a military stance. "Indeed. Be ready to commence activation of Unit 01."

**************************************************************************************

Shinji recalled his discussion with the First Speaker. *This will be most different than a Mobile Armor. Oh well, here goes.* Shinji gathered his mental energies as the Eva rocketed up to the surface. The head shot up. Shinji got an up-close-and-personal look at the Third Angel him/her/itself. Shinji remembered his orders, relaxed. Feeling the intense pain in his head grab him again, he struggled not to cry out as he felt control of his body leaving him.

Moments later, the Pilot of Eva 01 grasped out the controls. If the internal camera was working, no one would recognize Shinji. The look of self-doubt and a reserved personality gone, and using every bit of will power he posessed, the Pilot sprang himself at he Angel, with no reservations, and no questions.

**************************************************************************************

In the control room, however, there were a few more reservations, as well as questions. The former was coming from a very tense Captain, and the latter from a very confused doctor. Luckily for the doctor, she recovered her voice first.

"Whats his synch rate? Tell me now!" Unfortunately, there was no answer for the doctor. The calculations made by the MAGI did not account for the kind of mental energy that Shinji had; Therefore, his synch ratio was off the scale. Hearing this, Ritsukos voice degraded back into unintelligible spluttering. Shinji had to deal with all this over the radio, before he promptly turned it off. Shinji was considerably tense at this point, and his energy was failing him quickly. His strength could not last long enough to destroy the Angel. Then, his mind felt a calming presence to him that could only come from one person. ^Considering that they have never seen the kind of power we Second Foundationers possess, you must excuse their temporary shock, Pilot. Do not worry, I am here to refuel your mental strength. You will defeat this mutant.^ Shinji understood what the First Speaker meant when he said mutant with such anger. *After all, the mutant known only as the Mule had nearly destroyed both Foundations, but that is for later.* Evas Pilot felt a powerful voice yelling at him in his head, and it was causing him immense pain; he had no idea what was going on. The First Speaker told him there would be no pain, and yet, he felt control of his vital functions, and indeed, his very thought processes and senses drifting away as he screamed.

**************************************************************************************

"Shinji!!!" Misato was trying to understand what was going on with Shinji; the synchronization had gone off quite well, and even though his synch rate couldnt be measured, he seemed fine. This screaming was something that Misato was quite worried about. Her train of thought was interrupted by Maya Ibuki yelling out Shinjis vital functions.

"Shinjis brain waves are changing! I detect another set of brain waves! Shinjis original patterns are no longer there!" Ritsuko looked up at the monitor, and gasped at what she saw.

**************************************************************************************

The battle was over. The Eva was being "parked" back into the Hangar, and Shinji was about to come out of the entry plug. A very nervous Misato and a bubbling-over Ritsuko waited for him. When he finally did come out, all he had time for was a smile before he passed out from exhaustion.

**************************************************************************************

Shinji jerked into wakefulness. He immediately sat up and stared around at his surroundings. It seemed he was in a hospital, and saw his clothes folded neatly across the room. Bounding up, he threw off his hospital gown and strode across the room, buck naked. He promptly dressed and exited his room.

Looking at the patient list, he noticed the name of the other pilot he saw in NERV headquarters. *Hikari Horaki. Strange, my briefing did not include her. I must inform the Security Precentor of this latest development. I am sure he will be able to give me access to her files. I suppose I should see to this Hikari. After all, if we are to be fellow pilots, I should get to know her; Furthermore, she was.what is that term? Attractive, that is it. Yes.* He walked down the hall with a smile on his face. Unfortunately for him, someone noticed him before he could get to the First Childs hospital room. "Shinji! What are you doing out of your room?" Misato Katsuragi stepped up to him, with a half worried, half confused face. "You are to give your report to the commander immediately, and I, for one, would like to know how you did that." Shinji sighed and followed his superior.

**************************************************************************************

"How?" The question was merely one word, but asked in so many contexts, it would be quite difficult to answer. The commander sat with his hands bridged and intertwined in front of his face, so no one could tell of the confused look on his face and the tightening of his muscles around his mouth. The answer was merely another question. Misato, who was asking the questions, attempted to keep her composure.

The new Pilot of Unit 01, however, was having lots of fun making Ritsuko squirm. "What part of what I did requires explanation?" Shinji replied, with a bemused look on his face. Ritsuko needed no more of a signal. "What part requires explanation?" She frantically yelled, grabbing hold of his jacket. "What part doesnt require explanation? You arrive here today, and seem to know everything about the best kept secret on the planet! You are able to synchronize with the Eva with only a few hours of mental preparation, or whatever you call it, and are able to use your willpower alone to defeat an Angel by using some kind of energy technique that allows you to convert energy into a weapon from nothing! Do you mind kindly explaining?" Shinji merely looked at her with a confident expression and a raised eyebrow.

"Well, that might take a while, but I will indulge you. The information on the Eva project was supplied to me by my superior, a man who will be kept anonymous now. As for the synchronization, it merely required the right kind of mental capacity, which I have. The energy beam you saw did not come from nothing, but was merely the conversion of the electrical energy you inputted to the Angel to heat energy, which I then sent towards the Angel, as you call it. The material I wear was recently made by a breakthrough in metallic hydrogen applied technology, which has not been publicly introduced. One more thing, doctor. I have requested of Misato, and now I do so to you, please refrain from using contractions when I am within earshot, please. It is no big deal, of course. Merelydisturbing. So, if that is all, I will be leaving now. Once I find suitable accommodations, I will inform you of my location." Eva 01s Pilot turned to walk away, with both Misato and Ritsuko aghast. Just who is this kid? they both thought. However, the commander kept his composure. "That is unnecessary, pilot Ikari. Captain Katsuragi will be able to find you suitable accommodations, I am sure. Am I correct, Captain?" The tone of his voice made Misato jump back into reality.

"What? Yes, sir. I will begin so immediately." When Shinji left with Misato, Ritsuko turned to Gendo. "Are you sure you know what you are doing?" Without receiving any response from the commander, she saluted, and left. It seems he has grown up, Yui

**************************************************************************************

"What are you going to do that for?" Ritsuko almost lost her self control again. She was not pleased with the Captain. The response was swift. "Relax, Ritsuko. Its not like Im going to put the moves on him or something." Ritsukos response was quite what Misato expected.

"You had better not! I still dont understand your logic, which Im sure you dont have much of anyway!"

Misato had no time for this. "I am doing this so I can keep an eye on him. Does that make sense to you?!"

Ritsuko grumbled in reply, "Just make sure that eye is sober, Misato." Ritsuko hung up the phone rather quickly before an angered Misatos "WHAT???!!!!"

**************************************************************************************

"Welcome to your new home, Shinji." Misato opened the door to her apartment. Shinji looked inside. There were beer cans everywhere. That wasnt all of it though. There were beer cans on the table, on the floor, on top of other beer cansthere were enough beer cans to fill a warehouse with. Shinji asked after they entered and set his belongings into his room, "Are all these empty beer cans through your consumption, Misato?" When she nodded the affirmative, he asked, "Then how is it that you do not have liver failure?" At Misatos now very angry stare, he apologized immediately. Her temper lost steam.

"Think nothing of it, Shinji. After all, were rommies now, so I guess a little constructive criticism is ok. Make yourself comfortable. I just have to go change. Welcome home." With that, she walked off. Shinji sat down in a chair, after depositing the beer cans that occupied it already into the recycling. I suppose I will have to clean this up eventually. I will have to search NERV in search of this supposed "Instrumentality Project" or whatever it is. However, I should probably begin to write my report for the First Speaker and the head of Earth Security. I am sure he will be pleasantly surprised at the residence I currently occupy with Ms. Katsuragi Shinji snickered. Considering the First Speaker isnt around, I guess I could relax He chuckled at that. How pathetic. How does she live like this?. Sighing, he began to clean up the mess left by his hostess.

When Misato came out in her yellow tank top and jean shorts, she noticed Shinji cleaning up. "Maybe you should take a nice hot bath, Shinji. It relaxes the body, mind, and soul, you know." Misato did not notice Shinjis cringe when she mentioned the word "soul". "After all, you do have school tomorrow, no matter if you did get advanced college degrees inwhatever."

Shinji stopped cleaning and looked up at Misato. "Perhaps you have a point about that baththis has been quite a shift in my daily schedule. I believe I will take this bath." With that, Shinji grabbed a towel and sauntered into the bathroom, and exiting a few moments later, with nothing but a towel around his waist. Finding Misato in the kitchen, getting some instant ramen ready, he asked the obvious question that anyone who entered Misatos apartment was. "Misato, you do realize there is a penguin in the bathroom, right?" Misato explained to him that it was her penguin, Pen-Pen, who was currently occupying the bathroom, while staring at his chest which would make a Mr. Universe candidate become envious. Shinjis chest, as well as the rest of his body, was the effect of strenuous training, and looked to Misato like an organic piece of construction equipment.

To give Misato time to recover, Shinji changed the subject. "Misato, what do you know about Hikari Horaki? I know she is the other pilot, but why was she covered in bandages? I know it had something to do with the activation test of Unit 00, but I know no more than that."

Misato cleared her throat, regaining her composure. Ill have to work at being surprised less at the amount of classified data this kid knows. Hard to imagine hes a kid, with that bodystop it, Misato! Gain control! Respond naturally! Misato shook her head. "I do not know much more than that, Shinji. You should ask her. After all, you will be seeing her tomorrow." At Shinjis quizzical look, she continued. "She is the class representative of your class, so you will obviously be seeing her at school, as well as at NERV during your tests. Why are you interested, Shinji? I noticed the way you were looking at her, is that it? You think she is cute, dont you?" Considering his embarrassment rising, Shinji began to get nervous. He tried to make a tactical retreat.

"Excuse me, Misato. I see Pen-Pen has exited the bathroom. I will be taking my bath now. Good night." He ran off, much to the delight of Misato. She laughed. Its going to be fun with him around

Authors notes: Yes! Genetic Lessons: Adaption is finally complete! Sorry for taking so long, but school is very tough, and I also had to work on this HUGE Honors history project. If you noticed, I left lots of plot open to change or explanation later, like about the First Speaker, how Shinji could start the car, his lack of fear, why I call Shinji "the Pilot" whenever the Eva is around, etc. I still wanted to capture part of the original Shinji (the original) so I put in easy embarrassment as a nice little character flaw. I did make Ritsuko and Gendo a little more emotional than in the original series, but I am not good at writing characters like that anyway. The next episode, Genetic Lessons: Battle will incorporate the Eva series up to just after Asuka arrives on the scene and the 6th Angel afterwards.

Now, for all of the Rei fans out there: I did not make Rei the first Child for the simple reason that I dont know what to do with her, as a character. If anyone has any suggestions, review or email me at quanta_masta@hotmail.com. I would appreciate anyones idea of putting Rei into the storyline, but I most likely wont do it if I dont get a great idea to put her in there.

Shinji/Asuka romance fans: Please dont kill me. The attractiveness I inserted into Shinjis thoughts was on the assumption that there are too few Shinji/Hikari romances. I dont plan to make it a major issue, and I am still open to arguments to a Shinji/Asuka romance, but you'll have to contact me.

See ya later!
